We are early into 2017, and a few days removed from the 2017 Golden Globe awards, which caused some controversy when actress Meryl Streep, during her acceptance speech for her lifetime achievement award, condemned President-Elect Donald Trump, and basically turned her speech into some kind of political statement about how the “Hollywood Elite” have a responsibility to “resist” his presidency for the “rest of us” and how in a “Donald Trump America” the arts will die and only football and MMA will exist. Obviously, the speech made shockwaves, with liberals praising the “bravery of Meryl Streep” to “stand up to a bully,” and conservatives and alt-righters condemning Streep’s speech as “divisive” and “petty.” Controversy creates cash and speeches like the one delivered by Streep obviously serve a purpose for her to keep people talking about her; a wise move if fame is what puts food on your table, however, the more I think about it, and the more I think about her speech about “the arts,” (which by the way landed her in hot water with UFC President Dana White, who took offense on behalf of the entire UFC on the implication that Mixed Martial Arts is not an art form), the more annoyed I am that “the art” has been tainted with political messages, sermons, pandering, nannying, and far too many social-justice-themed messages.
Through the entirety of 2016, Hollywood, which tends to lean to the left with the range being anywhere from “slightly liberal” to “destroy all white men,” kept telling us how dangerous a Donald Trump presidency is to the point of annoyance. We even got this pretentious video put together with a bunch of celebrities from Marvel’s Avengers films all but demanding every one of us votes for Hillary Clinton:
As if that’s not enough, we have Lena Dunham, who is a rabid feminist and Hillary supporter doing hideous “underwear dance” pantsuit videos demanding we vote for Clinton while also basically condemning men throughout the video. Nothing persuades people’s opinions quite like a 4’9, meerkat-shaped, dumpy-bodied, wretched Megafeminist telling all of us with penises that we’re shitty human beings unless we do exactly what it says, right?
Sites such as Vox, Buzzfeed, and Vice would get in on the action trying to reinforce that this leads to millennial credibility for Clinton and echoing the message of these abominations, that we simply must do “what we are told” by the media. And even just yesterday, Buzzfeed posted articles claiming that Donald Trump urinated on prostitutes in Russia and that Russia is blackmailing him despite having no factual evidence of this whatsoever.
It’s not just that celebrities seem to be overly intent on pushing their politics on us, though. Earlier today, Age of Shitlords posted a great read with photos citing examples of how Marvel Comics has gone full social justice when it comes to “gender identity” and “3rd wave tumblr-inspired feminism.”
Sure, I can even admit, a Donald Trump MODOK Is hilarious for parody’s sake. What’s not so funny, however, is that it wasn’t intended to be funny so much as it was to tell me not to vote for the guy. Frankly all this anti-Trump stuff in movies and television is annoying, and I would have been equally annoyed had all of it been anti-Clinton-themed because I’m not trying to get a dose of politics in my comic books. I just want action and compelling storylines. I never want to have to read the word “mansplaining” in the pages of a comic book. Ever. For any reason.
We’ve had JJ Abrams go on record as saying the newer Star Wars films have racial and economic undertones as a serious influence (later Rogue One was mentioned as, once again, having underlying tones and warnings about a Donald Trump presidency).
Look at all the commotion over the 2016 all-female reboot of the Ghostbusters franchise, helmed by a director who didn’t care about the fans of the original franchise, and actresses whom also did not understand the target audience, basically telling long-time fans of the saga “so what? We don’t care if you don’t want gender politics, you either support us or… YOU’RE A MISOGYNIST.” It wasn’t “take it or leave it,” it was flat out “if you don’t like this movie, you hate women,” an ultimatum to try to shame people into seeing the movie, liking the movie, and treating it like the best thing ever even if it wasn’t. Newsflash: the finished product was NOT well-received at all.
Even video games aren’t safe. Dead or Alive Xtreme (Beach Volleyball) 3 did not come to America due to the fact the sexuality in the game might “offend” someone, even though we have a ratings system on our videogames to ensure people don’t pick up titles that contain content they may personally object to, and Capcom’s Street Fighter V took extra measures to ensure characters like Cammy, Chun Li, Laura and Rainbow Mika don’t do anything that the west might “object to” in their games, removing butt-slaps, and various camera angles.
It’s not even a secret that social media isn’t what it used to be either; whereas people used to feel social media was a platform to air their grievances of life, ones they may not always air in spoken word, it’s a known fact that Twitter and Facebook also now lean towards the “politically correct” side of things and therefore if it’s politically incorrect, you run the danger of being suspended or banned from their services, a silencing that can potentially have damaging effects on disconnecting others from the hideous digital Matrix we have created where “all must be connected.” And that’s a dangerous feeling in a world that says “social justice or else.”
My point is simply – celebrity entitlements have ruined entertainment. Entertainment in the past 2-3 years has become an oxymoron. The whole idea of playing a videogame, reading a book, watching a movie, reading a comic, enjoying a television show, listening to music, whatever you do to wind down in life… is to ENJOY yourself. You don’t want the stress, drama, and anxiety of having to be preached to, talked down to, scolded, shamed and all these other things that celebrities, the media, and supposed “artists” in these fields throw on you. It’s a proverbial non-consensual mental assault on your being. It’s akin to a mental rape where a bunch of IDEALS are forced upon you and Meryl Streep’s speech about wanting to defend the “art?”
Listen lady, the “art” has been lost to all these messages being thrown in everything. I watch a movie because I want to enjoy the story within it. I don’t watch it to get a daily dose of “I DON’T LIKE THE PRESIDENT AND YOU SHOULDN’T EITHER.” I’m not watching Avengers over what Robert Downey Jr.’s political opinions are. I’m watching the Avengers to see Tony Stark (Iron Man) kick somebody’s ass. We need to return to a society that can separate the political activism from the release that entertainment is supposed to provide.
People have had enough of the politics and enough of the narratives. I personally am trying to avoid political discussions on Asked or on the Riv and Landin Show unless it’s some major unavoidable story – why? Because I don’t care. I do my shows to have fun with them. I don’t care that you’re offended by “toxic masculinity” or “the president” or whatever stupid crap you’re offended by this week. The purpose of the existence of all this media – comics, videogames, movies, music, television – it’s all supposed to be ENTERTAINMENT so everyone needs to stop preaching and start ENTERTAINING again, and get away from the “MY POLITICS ARE _____” No. Shut up. We don’t care. Talk about the movie. Entertain us. We are not beholden to your whim just because we gave you our $10.00 to see a movie with lasers in it, nor did we do so to hear a half page speech about how we, the common folk, aren’t giving enough to charity, when you basically shit $20s every single hour of your life.
I am hoping that 2017 ushers the turning point where we can get back to having fun with “having fun,” because frankly I’ve had enough of all entertainment becoming a front to tell people what to do, and I don’t care which side of the political spectrum does it. If Hollywood were entirely comprised of the right, I’d still not want to hear it all day every day. Left, right, up, down, doesn’t matter – get it away from entertainment already because none of this is actually entertaining to anyone. Oh well, I guess I could at least maybe have sex, right?
Nope. Even that’s ruined. Thanks a lot, Tumblr.
